Old Mathers was felled by an iron bicycle-pump, hacked to death with a heavy spade and then securely buried in a field, by the narrator. Then the narrator walks into a parish where death is treated as an administrative detail and everything loops. The book's jokes about death are not jokes: they are the condition of the narrative. The circularity rip and this one are the same rip seen from two sides, the story loops because the narrator is dead, and the jokes are the tell.

[Use when]

A comic text keeps joking about death: catalog every instance before deciding any of them is just a joke.

[Why it matters]

Billy's rule, don't explain the weirdness away, catalog it, earns its keep here. The death-jokes are catalog entries, not punchlines: each one is evidence for the model. Once the model (the narrator died; the parish is the afterlife's bureaucracy) is on the table, every joke retroactively becomes a datum. This is OSINT discipline applied to fiction: the hypothesis that explains the most entries with the fewest assumptions wins, and he's dead explains the loop, the policemen, the bicycles, and the tone all at once.
