"All human happiness is biological happiness... all human happiness is sensuous happiness." The material/spiritual split is a fraud: the partition separating flesh from spirit is extremely thin. Digestion, sleep, a cool spring on a parched throat, the morning air after sleep — these aren't crude preludes to the "real" pleasures. Art, affection, music, even religious feeling all arrive through the senses. Deny the body and you get a world with "knowledge without understanding, criticism without appreciation, beauty without love, truth without passion."

[Use when]

Culture or religion tells you to feel guilty about enjoying food, comfort, music, or the morning air — the senses are the instrument, not the enemy.

[Why it matters]

Refined people love to be embarrassed by their senses, treating bodily pleasure as vulgar and "higher" pleasures as disembodied. Lin argues the reverse: the higher pleasures are just the senses, cultivated. Taste, hearing, touch, appetite — trained, not transcended — are the actual machinery of enjoyment. Asceticism doesn't refine you; it disconnects you from your own instruments.
