"Leisure in time is like unoccupied floor space in a room." Unused time is to life what unused floor space is to a room — the part that makes everything else usable. Fill every inch with efficiency and there's no room to move; the girl in the room where every inch is utilized feels cramped, not rich. Culture, judgment, friendship, and taste aren't byproducts of production — they're products of loafing. Efficiency, punctuality, and the hunger for achievement are the three American vices precisely because they pave over the empty space where life happens.

[Use when]

Your calendar is fully optimized and your life feels cramped — you don't need better time management; you need deliberately unoccupied time.

[Why it matters]

The productivity frame treats unoccupied time as waste to be optimized. Lin's mechanism says the opposite: emptiness is the enabling condition. A schedule with no slack can't produce judgment, a life with no idleness can't produce culture, and a person who can't loaf gracefully can't think clearly. Protect the empty floor the way you'd protect the foundation of the house.
