Murphy's thesis of the healing chapters: Mesmer's magnets, Lourdes water, chiropractic, Christian Science, the surgeon's scalpel — every school claims its theory heals, and every school can point to cures. His conclusion: the theory is irrelevant; the instrument is identical in all cases — the patient's own subconscious, triggered by faith. "There is only one process of healing and that is faith. There is only one healing power, namely, your subconscious mind." Paracelsus said it four centuries earlier: "Faith, however, produces miracles; and whether it is true or false faith, it will always produce the same wonders." Murphy presents these as case anecdotes (shrine healings, an 1840s surgeon's operations, a blister raised by a postage stamp, tuberculosis cured by a sidewalk-wood "relic") — never as controlled evidence, with no follow-up and no failures reported. Modern medicine rejects the premise.

[Use when]

Evaluating any healing claim — ask what the patient believed, not what the healer did.

[Why it matters]

It is the book's boldest and most load-bearing claim — the one that either makes the whole system coherent or collapses it. Read honestly: the anecdotes are the method's marketing, not its proof. The value is in the mechanism (belief as technique), not the case reports.
