The subconscious is most impressionable in the drowsy state: "the highest degree of outcropping of the subconscious occurs prior to sleep and just after we awaken" — in that state the conscious mind's objections go quiet and a suggestion sinks in like a lullaby. Baudoin's formula, which Murphy adopts as the master technique: "A very simple way of securing this (impregnation of the subconscious mind) is to condense the idea, which is to be the object of suggestion, to sum it up in a brief phrase, which can be readily graven on the memory, and to repeat it over and over again as a lullaby." Hence the "sleep technique": hand the subconscious its assignment on the way down — "Wealth," "Answer," "It is finished in Divine Order" — and let the night shift execute it.
