Self-knowledge is not one subject among many; it is the master key. 'He who has not known himself has known nothing, but he who has known himself has at the same time already achieved knowledge about the depth of the all.' Because everything is connected through one underlying reality, the single point you can observe from the inside is the correct place to start understanding the whole. Study the instrument doing the studying before the field it studies.

[Use when]

Use when starting a new domain — inventory your own starting assumptions before the facts. Use when a debate loops endlessly and no one has examined their own position. Use when coaching someone who 'knows a lot' but can't act on it.

[Why it matters]

It reverses the usual priority of 'learn about the world first.' If you don't know your own assumptions, motives, and how your knowing works, every external fact is filtered through an unexamined lens — so more information produces not more understanding but more confidently wrong conclusions. It explains why some highly-informed people cannot see what is in front of them.
