A ruler, founder, or manager can be genuinely effective while being blind to the force actually animating them — which means their power is borrowed and can be withdrawn. The flawed creator god does real work and speaks true things 'not knowing that the movement within him is from the spirit who moves him.' Diagnose any powerful actor by asking: what do they think is their own will, and what is actually moving them?

[Use when]

Use when analyzing a leader who takes credit for outcomes actually produced by a system, team, or moment. Use when someone's confident decisions run against their own interest — look for the unseen force moving them. Use when auditing your own sense of agency.

[Why it matters]

It's a sharper tool than 'they're lying' or 'they're stupid.' The mechanism is self-attribution of borrowed motion, which explains why powerful people overreach or act against their own interests — they mistake the instrument for the source. It lets you see past a leader's self-narrative to the real forces (capital, culture, a team, a historical moment) driving their decisions.
