'To become the enemy means to think yourself in the enemy's position.' Musashi goes further than Sun Tzu's 'know the enemy': he says BECOME the enemy — feel the world from inside his situation. 'He who is shut inside is a pheasant. He who enters to arrest is a hawk.' The trap looks like a fortress from inside and a cage from outside; adopt the enemy's eye and the advantage appears.

[Use when]

Use in any contest (negotiation, market, rival) where you keep being surprised — sit in the enemy's seat and read the board with his constraints. Use to counter fear of an opponent you've inflated into a fortress.

[Why it matters]

'Know the enemy' is external (intelligence, spies, reading signs). 'Become the enemy' is internal — a discipline of identifying with the opponent's position, constraints, and fears. Musashi's hawk/pheasant example shows the payoff: the same situation reads completely differently depending on whose eyes you use.
