'The gaze should be large and broad. This is the twofold gaze: Perception and Sight. Perception is strong and sight weak.' See distant things as if close, and take a distanced view of close things. The trained eye reads essence (spirit, intention) rather than surface detail — and that is the instrument of strategy.

[Use when]

Use when you're drowning in surface data (the enemy's visible moves) — step back to the distanced view and read the spirit behind them. Use to distinguish 'watching details' from 'seeing intention.'

[Why it matters]

Sun Tzu outsources knowledge to spies and reconnaissance — foreknowledge gathered from outside. Musashi internalizes it as the individual's twofold gaze: perception (strong, reads spirit) over sight (weak, reads surface). Same goal — knowing the enemy — opposite instrument: the spy network vs the trained eye.
