To act effectively on anything — a target, a market, an opponent, a patient — you must adopt its attention. 'The pursuer cannot pursue if he does not integrate his vision with that of the pursued... hunting is an imitation of the animal.' The hunter begins to behave like the game, perceiving the environment 'from the point of view of the animal, with the animal's peculiar attention to detail.' Deep attention is imitative: you become, in perception, what you are attending to.

[Use when]

Use when an action keeps missing its target — stop observing and start seeing from the target's point of view. Use in any pursuit where the quarry is an agent with its own attention.

[Why it matters]

This is the most actionable inversion in the book. Ortega's hunter doesn't just watch the prey from outside — he enters the prey's point of view and sees with its 'peculiar attention to detail.' It's the hunter's version of perspective-taking, and it transfers wholesale to negotiation, sales, diagnosis, or any act aimed at a responsive target.
