Total absorption does not require the object to be visible. 'The hunter, while he advances or waits crouching, feels tied through the earth to the animal he pursues, whether the animal is in view, hidden, or absent.' The focused person stays connected to their quarry by the invisible thread of attention even when it disappears. Presence survives the object's absence — the connection is maintained, not broken, when the thing goes out of sight.

[Use when]

Use when a long project or goal goes 'dark' and you're tempted to drop it — the thread of attention is what keeps it alive through the hidden stretches.

[Why it matters]

Ortega describes a state where the hunt continues through the hidden and the absent — the hunter 'feels tied through the earth' to a quarry he cannot see. This is the deep form of holding a goal: the object of attention remains present to you even when not present to your senses.
