After having broken away from all restraint as regards God and man, they gave a name to that reprobate state itself into which they had thrown themselves, and exalted it, that very negation of religion, or rather that real and living blasphemy, into a kind of god. They called it Liberty, and they literally worshipped it as a divinity. They appointed festivals besides in honour of Reason, the Country, the Constitution, and the Virtues.

[Use when]

Use when a movement claims to have abolished worship and then starts holding festivals. Use when the rational replacement for religion starts demanding the devotion religion used to get.

[Why it matters]

Newman's exhibit from the French Revolution: men who abjured every worship could not abide the vacuum — they canonized their own negation. The pattern is permanent: whatever dethrones God gets enthroned in His place, even if it has to be an abstraction. Iconoclasm always ends in a new altar.
