Infidelity leads to superstition, and the men most reckless in their blasphemy are cowards also as regards the invisible world.

[Use when]

Use when the loudest skeptic in the room turns out to be the most superstitious. Use when a disenchanted age starts consulting horoscopes, algorithms, and gurus.

[Why it matters]

Newman resolves Daniel's apparent contradiction — Antichrist both opposes all worship and institutes a strange god — with a law of human nature: the fiercer the unbelief, the more abject the superstition it breeds. You cannot kill the religious instinct; you can only redirect it, and the redirected version is cruder than what it replaced.
