In persecution the Church begins and in persecution she ends. He left her in persecution, and He will find her in persecution. You might set down persecution as one of the peculiarities by which you recognize her. Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake — a sort of sign and token of His followers.

[Use when]

Use when a community's respectability starts looking like its goal. Use when suffering for the faith feels like failure — Newman says it is the badge.

[Why it matters]

Newman makes persecution a mark of identity, not an accident of history: the Church that is never opposed has likely ceased to be recognizable. Comfort is the anomaly; opposition is the signature. This inverts the instinct to measure the Church's health by her acceptance.
