The Church sanctifies, yet suffers with, the world, sharing its sufferings, yet lightening them. Babylon was a mere prison of the Church; Rome had received her as a guest. For the sake of the Christians in it, Rome was chastised, not overthrown utterly.

[Use when]

Use when wondering whether to withdraw from a corrupt place or stay in it. Use when the faithful are suffering alongside the guilty and need to know the suffering is doing something.

[Why it matters]

Newman's answer to why Rome was not annihilated like Babylon: a city that hosts the Church gets Abraham's bargain — the righteous in it stay the judgment. The Church does not escape the world's plagues; she absorbs them and dilutes them, salt in the wound of history. Presence, not distance, is what restrains the wrath.
