VALIS is designed to make you feel that connections are accumulating. A detail appears. Then another. Then another. Suddenly everything seems connected. That is precisely when to stop and ask: connection or causation? Pattern or proof? Recurrence or coincidence? Narrative symmetry or external evidence?

— In our words · Source: VALIS (Philip K. Dick)

[Use when]

Details are accumulating and everything starts to feel connected: that feeling is the thing to investigate.

[Why it matters]

The book's rhetoric is a machine for manufacturing conviction: recurrence feels like evidence, symmetry feels like design, accumulation feels like proof. But a novel controls which details appear, the author is dealing from a stacked deck. The reading itself becomes an experiment: can you feel the hypnosis working and still keep the ledger? PKD is showing you, in real time, how a mind talks itself into certainty. The danger is not that Fat is wrong; it is that the mechanism works on the reader too.
