The question is not What is VALIS? It is: at what point does evidence become belief, and at what point does belief start manufacturing evidence? What if the book's central revelation is real, and what if the book itself is the mechanism by which the narrator becomes convinced it is real?

— In our words · Source: VALIS (Philip K. Dick)

[Use when]

Someone's research keeps confirming what they believed before they started: the investigation is the belief, wearing a lab coat.

[Why it matters]

This is where VALIS gets vicious. The exegesis is not a record of an investigation; it is the investigation manufacturing its own object. Every entry that confirms the revelation was written by a mind already committed to finding confirmation. The feedback loop is the revelation. That is true whether VALIS is God or a breakdown, the mechanism is identical, which is why the book refuses to choose. Certainty is not the output of the evidence; certainty is what the evidence-collection process was built to produce.
