"The aim of education or culture is merely the development of good taste in knowledge and good form in conduct." The cultured person is not the well-read one — "one who likes and dislikes the right things." Erudition without discernment is just facts without judgment; modern education rewards memorization because facts are easy to test and taste is not. Real culture is independent judgment with the courage to call fashionable, academic, political, or prestigious humbug by its name.

[Use when]

Judging an education, a hire, or your own learning — ask about taste and judgment, not the size of the warehouse.

[Why it matters]

The credential game optimizes for storage: degrees, reading lists, diplomas. Lin argues the whole game is measuring the wrong thing — knowledge should be a personal adventure of likes and dislikes, not compliance. A person with taste can navigate a flood of information; a person with only storage drowns in it while looking impressive.
