When many confident, mutually exclusive explanations circulate for the same thing, treat the contradiction itself as evidence that none of them is the real account — and the true explanation is likely the one that fits none of the stock forms. The Apocalypse of Adam lists thirteen kingdoms, each telling a different origin story for the illuminator, all ending the same way; the truth arrives 'out of a foreign air,' an origin none of the standard narratives could touch.

[Use when]

Use when a topic has many popular, mutually incompatible explanations and you need to decide where the truth likely is. Use when investigating origin stories, founding myths, or contested events. Use when you notice a set of narratives all share a hidden common premise — question that premise first.

[Why it matters]

It is a diagnostic for bullshit detection at scale. Proliferation of conflicting official stories — about a person's origin, a company's founding, an event's cause — is itself the signal. Rather than adjudicating which of the thirteen is right, step back and ask which account is excluded by the framework all thirteen share.
