Card #c576IR // #c576Verbatim excerpt
Distance traveled is not the same as progress toward a destination — a wheel turns and covers miles of circumference while staying exactly where it is. 'An ass which turns a millstone did a hundred miles walking. When it was loosed, it found that it was still at the same place. There are men who make many journeys, but make no progress towards any destination.' Measure progress against the destination, not against effort or motion.

[Use when]

Use when reviewing a quarter or year in which activity was high but nothing changed. Use when deciding whether to keep a routine that consumes time but is aimed nowhere. Use when a team confuses output volume with progress.

[Why it matters]

This is a diagnostic for busyness. Individuals and organizations routinely mistake movement — meetings, output, churn, 'staying busy' — for advancement. The parable gives a one-line test: 'am I any closer to a destination, or just turning the wheel?' It reframes the question from 'am I working hard?' to 'am I moving toward something?'
