Whatever your opponents can reach — your reputation, your body, your status — is a decoy, not you. The essential self stands outside the frame and watches: the crucified flesh is 'the substitute being put to shame,' while the 'living Jesus' stands apart, glad and laughing. To be unshakable, keep the real thing someplace the attack can't land, and treat the part being punished as a stand-in rather than as yourself.

[Use when]

Use when you take an attack personally and need distance. Use when an institution punishes a scapegoat and you're being pushed to identify with the victim's shame. Use when your reputation is being destroyed and you need to remember the thing being destroyed isn't the real you.

[Why it matters]

If you locate your identity in what others can touch — name, body, position — then any attack on those is an attack on you, and you spend your life defending a decoy. The move says the real self is what can't be nailed down; once you believe that, humiliation, reputation damage, and coercion lose their grip, because the target they hit was never you.
