One of India's oldest star catalogs is organized as worship, not observation. Each lunar mansion gets a deity, a verse, and an offering: the Kṛttikas belong to Agni ("he who dwells with the Kṛttikas — may Agni set us in well-being"), Mrigashirsha to King Soma ("King Soma has come with the Deer-head; auspicious is the asterism"), Ardra to Rudra, Punarvasu to Aditi, Tishya to Brihaspati, Ashlesha to the Serpents, Magha to the Fathers. Astronomy here is a calendar you can pray to — time is kept by feeding the stars their due, mansion by mansion, month by month. (TB 3.1.1)

[Use when]

Use when building any system that needs regular tending — the calendar is the mechanism, not the reminder.

[Why it matters]

The oldest science in the book is inseparable from ritual: they didn't just map the sky, they built a maintenance schedule for it. Data plus duty.
